What will you do
Underground Naples is the most famous and fascinating route in the city. Our guides will take you on a journey through 2400 years of history, from the ancient Greeks to the modern era, revealing the underbelly of Naples from an archaeological, historical, anthropological and geological point of view.
What to expect
A unique journey of its kind, which will remain in the heart and mind as one of the greatest experiences of this ancient city.
What's included
The visit includes:
The Greco-Roman aqueduct, where we will visit some of the tuffaceous cavities excavated in the Greek era (4th century BC), used as cisterns for the city's water supply for about 23 centuries.
Visit to the War Museum: During the Second World War, the Roman Cisterna and the subsoil of Naples was further modified to house the population during the bombings. In those years of the war about 40,000 people populated the underground areas of the city to escape the bombing and, after the end of the World Cup conflict, the same spaces were used to throw the debris of the rubble that the bombs had left. Only thanks to the activity of some volunteers who decided to clean up the foundations of the city, today Naples can offer an astonishing journey which, through time and history, gives tourists an impossible journey in other places. The Naples Underground War Museum collects and preserves documents relating to the Second World War, including materials, objects and documents relating to the period from June 1940 to September 1943.
At the end of the visit to Naples Underground, visitors will be led to the rooms dedicated to the War Museum. The passage through the Museum represents for visitors an immersive and exciting experience unique in its kind, a leap into the past to discover the past.
You will then visit the Orti Ipogei, a new project by Napoli Sotterranea, where in the darkness of the subsoil of Naples you will see that life is possible even in the bowels of the earth at a depth of 35 meters thanks to a permanent vegetable garden.
The Co.R.E Gallery is a contemporary art gallery located at the entrance to Naples Underground, and is an unmissable opportunity to discover the most promising voices of contemporary artistic research. It is a tribute to creativity and the ability to go beyond reality, to encroach on those territories of invention and poetry in which Underground Naples has its roots. Admission to the exhibition is free.
You will also visit:
Immediately after the excursion to Underground Naples, it is also possible to visit the remains of the ancient Greek-Roman Theater of Naples, also known as the Theater of Nero, for free. The visit includes the remains of the Roman Theater, incorporated in the 15th century by the houses that now exist in Via Anticaglia, Vico Cinquesanti and Via S. Paolo.
Subsequently you will enter a typical Neapolitan apartment, commonly called "basso", because it is located on the street level of the city, which is already inside the Roman theater. It will be enough to move a bed and open a trap door to access other rooms where Nero had his private dressing rooms, every time he came to stage his shows in Naples.
SUMMA CAVEA
The route has recently been expanded with a new discovery.
A fragment of the theater was found in an old carpentry in which a permanent exhibition was set up with about thirty antique cabinets, made of dark wood, to keep scenes from the nativity and the popular nativity scene. Within this new portion of the Roman theatre, which has just been brought back to life, another new discovery has been made. In the floor there were small channels that were completely blocked by the waste material generated by the circular saw. During the cleaning, the presence of sewer drains from the Bourbon era emerged, made with riggiole with blue designs.

To remember
Descending 136 low and comfortable steps, we will reach a depth of about 40 m. The environments crossed are all large and illuminated, except for a very short stretch whose path is, however, optional but full of suggestion because it is illuminated by candlelight, moreover the walking surface is regular and straight.
The excursion is also recommended for the elderly. The route is accessible and the steps to be taken are very low. There are handrails along the stairs.
For people who suffer from claustrophobia or are overweight, the spaces are large, the only narrow tunnel is an optional path that can be not covered with a waiting time of about 10 minutes. In any case, the visit can be interrupted at any time and you will be accompanied by an employee outside.
Suitable for children, but it is not possible to bring buggies with you
